TMJ / Jaw Pain Treatment in Joondalup

Experienced Chiropractic Care for Jaw Pain, Clicking & Headaches

TMJ (temporomandibular joint) dysfunction is a very common condition affecting the jaw joint and is frequently associated with neck pain, headaches and facial tension. At Joondalup Chiropractic, we see TMJ and jaw pain regularly and have extensive experience managing both acute and long-standing cases.

The jaw does not work in isolation. The head is balanced on top of the cervical spine, with the jaw muscles at the front and the upper neck muscles at the back working together to maintain equilibrium. Any imbalance in this system can contribute to jaw pain, neck pain or headaches, often all at the same time.

Common Causes of TMJ Dysfunction

One of the most common causes of TMJ pain is clenching and grinding (bruxism). This often occurs at night during periods of stress, but some people clench or grind their teeth continuously for many years, often without realising it.

Common contributing factors include:

  • Emotional or psychological stress

  • Poor posture, especially forward head posture

  • Neck stiffness or joint dysfunction

  • Habitual clenching during concentration or tension

Over time, excessive jaw muscle activity places strain on the TMJ and surrounding tissues, leading to pain, clicking, restriction or headaches.

Jaw Muscles Commonly Involved

Two primary muscles are responsible for jaw clenching:

  • Masseter muscle – a powerful muscle running from the cheekbone to the lower jaw

  • Temporalis muscle – a fan-shaped muscle over the temples

Tension in these muscles is a major driver of TMJ pain and headaches. Reducing muscle tone and restoring balance is a key part of treatment.

Simple Strategies to Reduce Jaw Tension

Managing TMJ often starts with awareness and relaxation strategies. One of the most important steps is recognising when you are clenching your teeth during the day, as this is often a subconscious response to stress.

Helpful strategies include:

  • Daily jaw relaxation and awareness exercises

  • Stress management techniques

  • Certain herbs, such as valerian, to assist relaxation at night

Stretching the jaw muscles is useful, but forcefully opening the mouth wide is not recommended, as this can overload the TMJ.

Instead, a safer and surprisingly effective technique to stretch the masseter muscle is:

  • Gently pinch your lips together

  • Puff your cheeks and blow hard, as if blowing up a trumpet

  • Hold the tension for short periods

This stretches the cheek and jaw muscles without excessive joint strain.

Breathing, Singing Techniques & TMJ Relief

Some of the most effective jaw relaxation techniques come from professional singers. One commonly taught exercise is blowing raspberries (relaxed lip vibration). While it may look silly, it:

  • Relaxes the lips, cheeks and throat

  • Regulates airflow

  • Reduces jaw tension

If you blow too hard or too softly, the exercise does not work—encouraging controlled breathing and relaxation. We also teach breathing strategies, including circular breathing, to prevent hyperventilation and excessive tension.

Chiropractic Care for TMJ Dysfunction

With over 30 years of clinical experience, Dr Frederic Cappon uses a combination of techniques to manage TMJ pain effectively.

Care may include:

  • Gentle chiropractic adjustments to the upper cervical spine

  • Soft tissue therapy to the jaw and neck

  • Dry needling for jaw, neck and headache-related muscle tension

  • Use of Pionex acupuncture needles, which are small needles embedded in a bandage and left in place for up to two weeks to provide ongoing relief

  • Education on self-management and daily exercises

Patients can gently press on the Pionex point when symptoms flare to reduce tension or headache pain.

Locked Jaw & Disc Displacement

In some cases, the TMJ can become locked, preventing full opening of the mouth. This often occurs when the internal fibrocartilaginous disc within the joint becomes displaced.

We utilise:

  • Gentle TMJ mobilisation techniques to help restore movement

  • Specific exercises such as placing the tongue behind the upper front teeth while slowly opening and closing the mouth

This tongue position prevents excessive opening and helps guide the disc back into a more functional position.

When Referral Is Required

In rare cases, individuals develop significant arthritis of the TMJ, often due to a shallow or poorly formed joint socket. When conservative care is no longer appropriate, referral for specialist assessment or surgical opinion may be required.

Knowing when to treat and when to refer is a key part of safe TMJ care.
