Gentle, Experienced Care for Children and Families

At Joondalup Chiropractic, pediatric care is guided by experience, reassurance and clinical judgement. As part of the Joondalup community for more than 30 years, Dr Frederic Cappon has assessed thousands of children, including extensive screening for scoliosis, growth-related changes and postural concerns.

Our philosophy with children is simple: assess carefully, intervene minimally and refer promptly when needed.

Newborn & Infant Chiropractic Care

Dr Cappon regularly sees newborn babies from as young as four days old, brought in by caring parents seeking reassurance. In most cases, the role of pediatric chiropractic is assessment rather than treatment.

With newborns and infants, our focus is to:

  • Examine the nervous system

  • Check the hips, shoulders and spine (neck, thoracic and lumbar regions)

  • Ensure normal movement patterns and development

  • Confirm the baby is meeting expected milestones

Very rarely is any mobilisation required. When indicated, only extremely gentle techniques are used. Often, the most valuable outcome is simply putting a parent’s mind at ease and confirming that what they are observing is completely normal.

If any concerns are identified, the child is referred immediately to a paediatrician or specialist for further evaluation.

A Minimalist, Safety-First Approach

We do not believe children need to be adjusted regularly.
However, we do believe children benefit from regular checks, particularly:

  • After falls or sporting injuries

  • During periods of rapid growth

  • When posture or movement changes are noticed

Up until around 10–12 years of age, most children are remarkably resilient and healthy. When treatment is required, it is usually limited to very gentle mobilisation or an activator technique.

Scoliosis Screening & Early Detection

From around 10–12 years of age, we begin actively screening for scoliosis. Early detection is critical and can significantly improve long-term outcomes.

Dr Cappon has identified many cases of scoliosis over the years and educates parents on what to look for at home, including:

  • Skin contour lines

  • Shoulder or hip asymmetry

  • Observation while standing and during forward bending

If scoliosis is suspected:

  • Low-radiation X-rays may be recommended to establish a baseline

  • Referral to a children’s hospital scoliosis clinic can be arranged

When identified early, modern scoliosis care and bracing can be highly effective.

We also assess for:

  • Leg length differences

  • Anatomical factors that may contribute to spinal curvature

Posture, Screens & Growing Spines

Children often tolerate poor posture without discomfort—until they don’t. Around 13–14 years of age, many young people begin to experience neck and upper back pain, often related to:

  • Prolonged screen use

  • Slouching posture

  • Looking down at devices for extended periods

Simple strategies can make a big difference, including:

  • Avoiding sitting cross-legged on the bed while using devices

  • Lying face down and gently arching backwards as a counter to slouching

  • Supporting the small of the back to prevent shoulders rounding forward

Sport, Bone Health & Long-Term Wellbeing

We strongly encourage sport, varied physical activity and movement throughout childhood and adolescence. This is particularly important for:

  • Developing good bone density

  • Building strength and coordination

  • Supporting long-term spinal health

Peak bone density is typically reached in the late teens to early 20s, especially in young women. After this point, bone loss gradually exceeds bone formation. Encouraging healthy activity early plays a crucial role in reducing future osteoporosis risk.

Health Is a Family Culture

Seeing health professionals alone does not create health. At Joondalup Chiropractic, we believe the most powerful influence on a child’s wellbeing is family modelling.

We support families by reinforcing:

  • Regular exercise and movement

  • Healthy sleep habits

  • Balanced nutrition

  • Positive attitudes toward health and resilience

Our role is to guide, educate and support—but long-term health is built through daily habits at home.
