Pregnancy Care in Joondalup

Experienced Chiropractic Care During Pregnancy

At Joondalup Chiropractic, our chiropractors are highly experienced in pregnancy care, supporting women through all stages of pregnancy and the physical changes that come with it. Pregnancy places unique and evolving demands on the body and gentle, informed care can make a significant difference to comfort, mobility and overall wellbeing.

Over more than three decades in practice, Dr Frederic Cappon has treated hundreds, if not thousands, of pregnant women across all trimesters including many twin pregnancies. This depth of experience allows us to provide calm, safe and appropriate care tailored to each stage of pregnancy.

How Pregnancy Changes the Body

Hormonal changes during pregnancy cause significant structural and biomechanical changes. Increasing levels of relaxin lead to ligament laxity which alters joint stability and movement patterns.

Common pregnancy-related issues include:

  • Pelvic rim instability, affecting the sacroiliac joints and pubic symphysis

  • Low back pain and pelvic pain as the pelvis adapts to load changes

  • Increased stress on the abdominal wall and pelvic floor

  • Postural changes as the centre of gravity shifts

As pregnancy progresses, particularly from around 32 weeks onwards, these changes often become more noticeable.

Pelvic Pain, Circulation and Leg Swelling

As the baby sits deeper within the pelvic bowl abdominal pressure increases, which can make venous return more difficult. This may lead to:

  • Swollen legs and ankles

  • Varicose veins

  • Heaviness or aching in the lower limbs

Gentle care aimed at improving mobility and reducing mechanical stress can help manage these symptoms.

Foot Pain and Arch Support in Late Pregnancy

Ligament laxity later in pregnancy can also affect the feet. Reduced support through the arch may lead to:

  • Foot pain

  • Heel pain

  • Altered walking mechanics

Proper foot support during this phase is often essential to reduce strain through the lower limbs pelvis and spine.

Gentle and Minimalist Chiropractic Care

Our approach to pregnancy care is gentle and conservative. From around 32 weeks onwards, we adopt a minimalist intervention strategy, doing as little as possible to make the patient as comfortable as possible.

Care may include:

  • Gentle joint mobilisation for painful pelvic or spinal joints

  • Soft tissue techniques to ease muscle tension

  • Dry needling, when appropriate, for localised muscle soreness

  • Advice on posture movement and daily activities

  • Recommendations for pelvic support belts or braces when additional stability is required

All techniques are adapted specifically for pregnancy.

Comfort-Focused Chiropractic Tables

Our state-of-the-art chiropractic tables feature a swing-away abdominal section, allowing pregnant women to lie face down comfortably even in late pregnancy. This positioning provides significant relief for many women and allows gentle treatment without strain.

Preparing for the Postpartum Period

Pregnancy care does not stop at birth. We also discuss what to expect postpartum, including common issues such as:

  • Low back pain from bending and lifting

  • Neck and upper back pain associated with breastfeeding and prolonged looking down

  • General muscular fatigue as the body recovers

Addressing these factors before the baby arrives can make the transition into early motherhood far more comfortable.
